Why Christian Education?

But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of knowing of whom thou hast learned them; and that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.
- 2 Timothy 3:14-16

We are grateful that our parents see the importance and advantages of giving their children a Christian education. Westwood Christian School’s purpose is to teach the student the Word of God and to train them to serve Jesus. God has given us the wonderful privilege of doing this while providing excellence in education.

It was during the 19th century that Princeton theologian A. A. Hodge made a very astute observation concerning public education.

"I am as sure as I am of Christ’s reign that a comprehensive and centralized system of national education, separated from religion, as is now commonly proposed, will prove the most appalling enginery for the propagation of anti-Christian and atheistic unbelief, and of anti-social nihilistic ethics, individual, social and political, which this sin-rent world has ever seen.
- A. A. Hodge

This is coming from a 19th century theologian way before the problems of drugs, sex, and alcohol in the public school. (I hesitate to call it public because the public really doesn’t decide what’s being taught.)

During the Reformation age Martin Luther was certainly alert to problems with education that leaves God out.

"I advise no one to place his child where the Scriptures do not reign paramount. Every institution in which men are not increasingly occupied with the Word of God must become corrupt...I am much afraid that schools will prove to be the great gates of hell unless they diligently labor in explaining the Holy Scriptures, engraving them in the hearts of youth."
- Martin Luther

We are looking forward to an amazing 2022-2023 school year. Thank you for the confidence that you place in Westwood Christian School.
